Pros

  • It does a good job of slowly increasing the difficulty of each level to keep players prepared for those higher floors.
  • Fast and simple game play makes it a good choice for players of different skill levels.
  • Requires little storage space and few keys to use.

Cons

  • As the background only changes with each set of 100 levels, it can feel boring.
  • The repetitive game play can turn off some players who like varied and exciting games.
  • Frequent or constant play can leave players feeling frustrated due to the similarities between levels.

Icy Tower is an action and arcade game designed by Free Lunch Design. Similar to classic arcade games like Donkey Kong, it might take you back to your childhood. Unlike those early video games, this computer game will keep you guessing and wondering what to do next. Player start at the bottom of a large tower and slowly work their way to the top of the tower. Many lovers of the game find themselves playing time and time again to improve their scores and do better than their friends.

Though it might seem like a basic and simple game at first glance, it quickly becomes clear that this is a game of skill. You must press the spacebar to jump from one floor to the next floor, and you can use the arrow keys on your keyboard to keep your character moving. The more you press those keys, the faster your character moves, which is helpful when it comes to jumping across larger spaces. After you get to the fifth level in Icy Tower, the ledges and floors that you jump on start moving to make the game a little harder. On the upper levels, those floors will even move down, which requires you to move faster or risk dropping all the way down to the first level.

There are 1,000 floors in the game, and players must work hard and fast to get to those upper levels. They earn points based on how well they do on each floor, and the game gives players a total cumulative score when they complete the game. Icy Tower also offers players the chance to save a copy of their game play to watch their performance again in the future.

The main problem with Icy Tower is that it is a simple and basic game, which can feel boring and dull to some players. The background and flooring of the game remains the same for 100 levels, and many players will find that it gets fairly repetitive towards the end. There are only so many times that you can make your character jump and move across the floor before you want to take a break. If you have players of different ages sharing a computer though, this is a great choice. Younger and inexperienced players will love slowly increasing their scores and moving up with each play. While Icy Tower is a basic game, it is also a fun one that many love.
